Canterbury primary intermediate tournment
On the 11th -13th of November I had a tennis tournment in Lincoln. Well this is where it starts on Friday, I was supposed to have three games, but guess what it was to windy and the ball just went flying over my head all the time. In the end they decided to delay play until Saturday, so I only got to play one match and I won 9-3. After play was delayed, we went to the cafe down the road. I got a juice and a pie, it was YUMMY! On Saturday the 12th of November I got up early and guess what? They called it off because it was pouring down. I was so bored with no tennis. Then finally on the Sunday it was beautiful. It was really warm and sunny and I got to play four matches. My first singles match I won 9-3 then in the final I won 9-2. Then it was time for doubles, I was all ready and set to go! In the semi final we won 9-7 and in the final we won 9-8 (7-4). I almost forgot, my doubles partner was Erin Connelly-Whyte. We had a awesome time.

Team Toroa's science Investigation
As part of our machines topic, Team Toroa has decided to do a science investigation involving pulleys. We are trying to measure how much force used to lift a 1 litre bottle of paint 40 cm off the ground. Then, we measure how much force after we change the amount of pulleys we used.
But we have had a little bit of trouble getting two pulleys to work...

Book Review, Gone
Gone by Michael Grant
Gone is a story about a small town in California where one day everyone fifteen and over disappears. Without the BOOM! or the BANG! They just disappeared, POOOFED. But it's not all fun and games for the survivors. As a small but powerful group takes over the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone) the question is; is it for the right reasons?
Gone is a MUST read series. A story where loyalties and responsibilities are tested. For anyone who loves The Hunger Games and Tomorrow When The War Began you will definately and completely love and admire Gone. Suitable for kids 11 and over.

Last Term!
The holidays have sadly come to a close and we are back at school again! But this is no ordianairy term, this is the last term of the whole year! It's going to be a rather short term though with only 7 and a half weeks! Our short term will include Athletics, Prize Giving and many other exciting events.
The holidays have brought many exciting things including the winning of the Rugby World Cup 2011! Finally after 24 years the All Blacks have regained the Web Ellis Cup by defeating France 8-7.
Hopefully this term will be as exciting as the last!

Ice Cream
Ice Cream
After scooping the freezing ice delicacy it made my mouth water and want, no need for more. Feeling the antarctic iciness my mouth becomes a frozen igloo. It’s hypothermic temperature distributed to it’s sweet and tender flavour. It’s luscious colours not only blended but clashed, like two tidal waves becoming one. Tasting this upmost luxury is one of the most treasured moments anyone can have.

Ice Cream!
Ice Cream
I love gobbling down the sweet, creamy and freezing vanilla goodness. It drips slowly down my fingers and numbs my frozen teeth. I nibble on the sweet golden cone and try to savour every drop. The coolness gives me such pleasure on a scorching hot summer day. I draw the delicious flake out of its white fluffy dream and plop it into my watering mouth. This delicious treat is definitely the best ever snack in the world!

Super Spellers
On Wednesday 6th July, the Yr 7 & 8s went to the Extra! Spelling Quiz at Timaru Boys High. The two Dorie Teams were Annabel, Olivia & Zabina, and Kate, Thea & Joseph.
The questions included fixing spelling, spelling words, mystery words, and other challenging questions.
Some of the tricky spelling words were words like raucous and synagogue - did you know how to spell them?
Team One of Dorie (Olivia, Annabel, Zabina) scored 84%, and Team Two (Kate, Thea, Joseph) scored 83%.
It was very much enjoyed by the Two teams of Dorie and the parents and teachers enjoyed it too.
A competition about Current Events will be coming up as well and Mrs T is keen on entering us in as well.
We would love to go next year and maybe that time we could go for gold and get that gold medal...

AVAILLL
At the moment for Availll we are watching Bridge To Terabithia. On the first day we did Take a dictionary to the movies. For that we are in groups and we have a letter each. The student assistants would pause the movie and then they would call out a letter. The persons who's letter was called out would look up the hardest word on the screen in the dictionary. The next activity was surprise subtitles. The student assistants pause the movie and we have to write down the subtitle we last saw on the screen.

On Shaking Ground
Recently, Canterbury has been feeling some more aftershocks. On Monday 13th June at 1.00 there was a 5.5 magnitude aftershock/earthquake felt by some of the students at Dorie School. At that time, the YR 7 & 8's were at manual and also felt the shake.
Following the 5.5, there was a 6.0 magnitude shake as well. The 6.0 was felt all in Christchurch and even down in Dunedin & Invercargill. These earthquakes caused more destruction to Christchurch, and some of the effects were similar to the 22nd February.
Also, on the morning of Wednesday 15th June, there was another 5.5 magnitude aftershock, felt by some residents of Dorie.

Wheels Everywhere!!
Today is Wheels Day!! Everybody brought things with wheels, from suitcases to measuring wheels!! Everybody was split into 7 groups then given an activity to start with.
Faiz and Annabel's group started with decorating a bike. You have 10 minutes to use items given (streamers, balloons, etc.) to decorate a bike of your team member. You had to decorate so it was creative and looked awesome! Mrs. Townshend then took a photo when you were finished. The winners were judged by either creativity or teamwork.
Joseph and Harriet's group did the slot car with Mr. Lucas and had some very exciting races! The finals were very intense. We thank Mr. Lucas very much for bringing in his slot cars and slot car track.
Nicholas and Kate's group went to bike races and scooter races with Ms. Reader. Lots of people enjoyed racing others and showing how fast they can go.
Kaitlyn and Zabina's group started on making delicious pinwheels and cheese rolls with Miss A. We all had to make sure our hands were throughly washed before we started. I'm sure we all can't wait to eat them!!
Olivia and Timothy's group began the morning with tyre races out on the field. We all had very intense races with others in our group. When we had finished we all had cold, wet and grass covered hands!!
Tomas and Thea's group kicked off with hoops at the court with Ms. Walls. We had some very tricky warm up activities that all got our brains thinking. We then passed the hoops to each other and did other things with hoops.
Georgia and Juan started with the obstacle course which the seniors had set up earlier that morning. The obstacle course included 2 teams versing each other. You have to zig-zag between cones then go other some dodgy jumps.
Overall Wheels Day was really fun and we had a great time. Lets hope we do it again next year, and we thank all the teachers for supervising the events and making Wheels Day happen.

Topic of transport
For our topic we have been learning how transport can ship and truck around the world to transport objects that could be sold. We have been doing scenarios of what we would do if we had to ship and truck things around the world. So we had to print out copies of maps and search up the places where we need to go. We had six teams and there was a captain Geo, super symbolist mishearing magicians and gadget cadet. So we will Sherie them at the assembly. From Timothy and Nicholas
Winter Sport Practice
Coming up soon is the Mid Canterbury Winter sports tournament. Every school around the district will compete in many different sports. Every Friday we have practice with our principal Ms Walls. We are going to put in teams for netball and hockey. The boys are angry that we don't get to play rugby and soccer. Last year the hockey and netball teams got in the top five. We hope we do well this year.

Last week it was book week. Well done to all the winners of our dress up competition. All the children had wonderful costumes on - they all looked very real. Team Toroa made Business Cards for our book character and put them on the wall. We had to come up with a slogan for our character.
